This is what's important to me.
mon·o·zy·got·ic - developed from a single fertilized ovum, as identical twins.

Welcome! My name is Nathan Barber. I'm a visual journalism major at Western Washington University with a concentration in film studies and an emphasis on sports media. I've lived in the Pacific Northwest almost my entire life. By the time I graduate from WWU I will have moved 24 times in the last 12 years so I just consider all of Western Washington to be my home.
What I love most about being behind the camera is the mindfulness that comes along with it. I cannot be anywhere else but in the moment, right then and there, and that's what life is about to me. Being right here, right now.
I believe what separates me from the herd is how critically I think about photography and videography. I'm fascinated with the relationship between space, time and light, how we exist within those, and how I can harness those elements as a tool to create unique and eye-catching visuals. I often like to incorporate the use of projectors and long exposure in my work, pushing my understanding of the world around me whenever possible. I find it to be an extremely gratifying experience to push my perception of the world around me to its limits and challenge myself to interpret things a little differently.
My experience has ranged from lead camera operator and switchboard operator for live music broadcasts, to three years of sports media videography during my time in college, to photojournalist/writer for various student publications where my work has received distinguished awards including "Photographer of the Quarter" on The Front in Spring 2024, "Most Unique Photographer" on The Planet in Winter 2024, as well as various awards for my photography in student art shows.
The bulk of my portfolio consists of sports videography, mostly covering soccer and basketball. If I'm being honest, I never thought I'd see myself in this field but I'm glad it's where I've ended up. I've come to really enjoy being on the sidelines, catching all the action, all the little moments and putting them together so our athletes, friends, family and fans alike can enjoy them as if they were right there with me.
Most of my work has been extremely quick turnaround, often delivering a video either day of or next day after an event. It's my hope to be able to slow down so I can tell more intimate stories. That's what's rewarding to me.
I started college in 2020 after being laid off due to Covid. It was a blessing in disguise really. These last four years have been some of the most challenging and fulfilling years of my life so far, and I'm eager to build a successful future so I can break the cycle of poverty I was born into.
I've been blessed with an amazing support group of loving friends and family members that believe in me more than I do at times and keep me going. I'm thankful for the opportunities I have ahead of me and am excited to be the newest addition to The Snowboarder's Journal in Winter 2025 as an A/V intern. Everything I do is to build a better and brighter future.
My other passions include screenwriting; I love writing scripts and if you want me to talk your ear off just ask me about Blade Runner or about what I'm currently working on. I'm also passionate about spending time with friends and family up on Mt. Baker, snowboarding until my legs give out, then relaxing in the hot tub or battling for the number one spot on our Star Wars pinball machine at our cabin in Glacier, Wa. I'm an avid gamer. Before anything in life I consider myself to be a gamer most of all. During the NFL season I'm watching the Seahawks be their own worst enemy. Other than that, I'm probably hanging out with my cat Valentine and if I'm not, I'm certainly wishing I was.

Thank for getting to know me,
Nathan Barber
